Poached Pears

Peached Pears - cored, cores, spices, packed

  • 6 William Bartlett pears (or another variety that will keep firm when cooked)
  • 50 grams dried cranberries
  • 50 grams pecans
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 cinnamon quills
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cloves


  • core pears
  • remove seeds and any rough bits from cores
  • smash the cardamom seeds and cloves in a pestle and mortar – not finely, just smashed around a bit, remove from martar
  • smish to smoothish the cores, pecans and cranberries
  • ground cinnamon, cardamom and cloves to above mixture
  • pack mixture into pears
  • pack pears into slow cooker
  • add cinnamon quills and wine
  • cook overnight (or all day)  on low in slower cooker
  • serve with porridge or yoghurt or both with another pinch of cinnamon on top for good measure
